Early November Update

This is the most productive fall garden that I have had going into the winter months. It will be interesting to see how long we are able to harvest greens going forward. The key will be to adequately protect the greens from frost. So far I have gotten away with some plastic that doesn't quite reach from side to side, but soon, I will need not just one but two suspended layers.

We are currently in what might be called an Indian Summer with lots of sun and temperatures into the 70's. No sign of frost in the extended forecast either. Perhaps the most recent planting of lettuce will get to harvestable size before December?

  1. hi, i've been doing cold frames for some years and have found that i need at least two layers of thick plastic, firmly fitted, or at least one pane of glass....using both works best. i also cover with plastic and/or foam the wood of the raised beds. i can harvest up until the deep freeze of january. often kale will resurrect itself when the weather warms in march if left covered. then i transplant spinach, lettuce, arugula, kale plants (early march) under the glass and have nice early salads. these plants will mature early, yielding seeds in september or october. i have kale and celery plants several years old in the garden using this method.good luck!

    1. Thank you for sharing your experiences! Yes, I am planning to go with two layers, but have been lucky so far that the temperature has not fallen far below freezing. I must be using the wrong kind of kale because it always goes straight to seed after overwintering.
